If you didn’t enjoy Week 6 in college football, there’s something seriously wrong with you. There were tight finishes, upsets and walk-off field goals from the start all the way until the end. From start to finish, it was easily the most action-packed Saturday of the season. Once again, no team personified that tension than No. 14 Notre Dame, which beat Virginia Tech on a last-second field goal to win 32-29 in Blacksburg. The Fighting Irish move to 5-1 with their sole loss coming in Week 5 to No. 5 Cincinnati.
But Notre Dame wasn’t the only team that barely escaped with a win. After watching a 13-point halftime lead disappear in the third quarter, No. 9 Michigan used a late fumble and go-ahead field goal to survive a scare from upset-minded Nebraska. However, not all favorites came away with a victory. No. 10 BYU had turnover problems in its 26-17 home loss to Boise State. And, of course, top-ranked Alabama had its first loss in more than a year to Texas A&M in College Station thanks to a walk-off field goal.
Elsewhere, No. 3 Iowa came back to stun No. 4 Penn State to stay undefeated and remain squarely in the national title race. In the Red River Rivalry, No. 6 Oklahoma came back from a 21-point deficit to stun No. 21 Texas behind the play of backup quarterback Caleb Williams, who replaced ineffective Heisman Trophy candidate Spencer Rattler at halftime.
