Bears sign Woods to the practice squad, Graham restructured, and other notes from the wire – Windy City Gridiron

The Chicago Bears cut inside linebacker Josh Woods on Monday to make room for free agent wide out Breshad Perriman, and with Woods making it though waivers unclaimed today, the club signed him to their practice squad. Woods takes the final spot on Chicago’s 16-man squad that you can see right here.

Today was also the first day of the week that teams can submit a protected list of practice squad players, and the Bears were one of 14 teams that did not protect anyone. For those wondering why teams wouldn’t protect anyone, keep in mind that most of these players were literally just on waivers and not one other team wanted them at that time. I’m sure as injuries begin to mount up around the league that most teams (including the Bears) would protect some of their practice squadders.

The #Bears also waived defensive lineman Lacale London from their reserve/injured list today with an injury settlement. London, a 2020 UDFA who played at Western Illinois University and Peoria High School, injured his elbow in the Bears preseason finale.

Earlier this morning the news broke that the Bears restructured the contract of 34-year old tight end Jimmy Graham, which saved the Bears $4.66 million in cap space this year by converting $5.825 million of his salary into a signing bonus. They also added 4 void years on the contract to help with the cap hit, so if Graham walks in free agency after the 2021 season then the Bears will get hit with $4.66 in dead cap space next year.

The Bears will hold practice at Halas Hall the next three days in preparation for their season opener on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams.
